Two water tanker trucks provided to assist in the distribution of desalinated water to businesses, communities and households in Funafuti, Tuvalu

The European Union-funded Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Scaling Up Pacific Adaptation (GCCA+SUPA) project seeks to strengthen water security in Tuvalu. The Climate Change Department, in the Ministry of Finance, is the focal point for the project.

As part of the project, two water tanker trucks, each with a capacity of 10,000 litres, have been provided to the Government of Tuvalu to improve the distribution of desalinated water to households, communities and businesses in Funafuti, Tuvalu.

The two trucks arrived in October 2022, a critical time as Tuvalu is currently experiencing drought, a period when there is a high demand for desalinated water. The government currently has one water truck in operation carrying out water distribution to households, community cisterns and government buildings and schools. The one truck alone is not sufficient to meet the water delivery demands in Funafuti.

On Friday 28th October 2022, an official handing over of the two new water trucks was carried out by Mrs Iunipa Teatu, the Acting Secretary for the Ministry of Finance to Mr Sumeo Silu, the Acting Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure. In accepting the trucks, the Acting Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure thanked the European Union, the GCCA+SUPA project and the Climate Change Department for the provision of the trucks and highlighted that the additional trucks will significantly boost water supply and delivery in Tuvalu and that the public can anticipate shorter delivery waiting times.
