Video: Scaling up coastal protection in Tonga: 2014 – 2023

Tonga’s coastal communities rely on the ocean for sustenance, but climate change and rising sea levels increasingly threaten their livelihoods. The low-lying island of Tongatapu, home to the capital Nuku’alofa, is especially vulnerable to flooding and erosion. To address these challenges, the Tongan government has reviewed climate policies, established a Climate Change Fund, and developed strategies for coastal protection. These efforts, supported by the European Union-funded Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Scaling Up Pacific Adaptation (GCCA+ SUPA) project, have laid a strong foundation for scaling up coastal protection measures and fostering a more resilient Tonga.
